   RESEARCH|Search

The Research|Search page allows you to search an online archive of research documents from all brokers whose research you are able to access via your Thomson Reuters permissions. House Research users can also search their firm's archive of notes and reports.

StarMine categorizes all broker (and house) research as one of three types:
  • Company research: research about one or a small number of companies. It may also include "Morning Notes" which typically cover a wide array of unrelated companies.
  • Industry research: research about several companies in the same industry.
  • Strategy research: research that does not appear to be Company research or Industry Research.
The Filter Conditions section of the page is divided into two tabs, based on the type of research you want to find: Company and Broker Industry/Strategy. House Research users also have a third tab to search across House Industry/Strategy reports.

Search using the Company tab if you are looking for research about a ticker or stock set. Specify your search on the following options:
  • The Ticker(s) input box allows you to search for research related to one or more securities.
    • The Primary Ticker check box in this section allows you to specify whether to want all research pertaining to a ticker, even if the research is focused on other securities, or only research where the specified security is the primary focus of the research. If you wish to see only those research documents focused specifically on the selected ticker, check the box to restrict your search to "primary" ticker research.
    • You can search for research on multiple tickers by entering multiple tickers in the input box, separated by commas or semicolons.
    • The "Lookup" link allows you to find a security's ticker when you only know the company name.
    • If you want to search the research archive by conditions other than ticker you should leave the Ticker(s) input box blank.
  • The Stock Set condition allows you to search for all research on a particular stock set.
  • Select Restrict to Analysts to limit results to those authored by particular analysts.
    • Choose "Last Name(s)" and enter one or more (comma-separated) analyst surnames to restrict results to those analysts, or
    • Choose "Your Favorite Analysts" to search for all research by analysts in your Favorite Analysts list.
  • Select Restrict to Brokers to limit results to reports from particular brokers.
    • Choose "Broker Name(s)" and enter one or more partial broker names, or
    • for House Research users, choose "Your Firm" to limit results to House Research.
  • For Ratings and Comments users, select Restrict to Highly Rated Broker Research to limit results to Broker research on which at least one user at your firm has published a "thumbs up" rating.
  • The Restrict to Initiation Reports option allows you to limit your search to analyst initiation reports, which tend to include an in-depth analysis of a company's business.
  • Text Search allows you to search the text of research documents for specific words or phrases. See our Search Tips for more information about Text Search.
House Research users: search using the House Industry/Strategy tab to find house research about industries or countries.
  • Choose the Industries… In Countries option to search for house research with one or more industry tags in the countries you specify. Use the "Select Industries" and "Select Countries" links to specify your search.
  • Choose the Strategy on Countries option to search for house research that is focused on countries, with no industries specified. Use the "Select Countries" link to choose the countries to search for.
  • Choose the All House Industry/Strategy option to search for all house research with industry and/or country tags.
  • Select Restrict to Analysts to search for house research by specific authors (by last name) or by any author in your "House Analysts" list.
Use the Broker Industry/Strategy tab to find broker industry or strategy pieces.
  • Choose the Industries… In Countries option to search for house research with one or more industry tags in the countries you specify. Use the "Select Industries" and "Select Countries" links to specify your search.
  • Choose the Strategy option to see all broker strategy reports.
  • For Ratings and Comments users, select Restrict to Highly Rated Broker Research to limit results to Broker research on which at least one user at your firm has published a "thumbs up" rating.
  • Text Search allows you to search the text of research documents for specific words or phrases. See our Search Tips for more information about Text Search.
Beneath the filter criteria, the Date Range dropdown allows you to restrict the research that passes your search according to publication date. Press Go to run the search. The New Search button clears the search criteria and returns them to the default options.

In the "Broker Research" table of documents:
  • You can select a column header to sort the research according to that data item. Selecting the same column header a second time reverse-sorts the research based on the selected item.
  • Selecting the "1" icon associated with a research document allows you to view the first page of the document.
  • Selecting the PDF icon or the title of the document launches the document.
  • If a user at your firm has published a rating or comment on a broker report, you will see either a "thumbs up" icon, a "thumbs down" icon, or a comment bubble (when someone has published a comment, but not a rating). Hover the mouse cursor over this icon to see the comments and ratings in a floating palette.
  • The check boxes along the right side of the page allow you to select multiple of the research documents displayed on the page in order to take additional action regarding the selected documents.
    • The link to "Combine selected reports for printing" can be used to save you the time of having to save or print many research documents individually. Instead, you can use this feature to pull multiple documents into a single PDF document that can be saved or printed a single time.
    • For users who subscribe to StarBox, a link to "Email me selected reports" is present on the page. With this feature, users can indicate one or more research documents that StarMine will send to your Inbox as a PDF attachment. A separate e-mail will be sent for each document selected, giving you the flexibility to delete some documents while keeping others.
For House Research users, Search also displays House Research company reports in a separate table of results.
  • Hover the cursor over the "paper clip" icon to see a list of file attachments on the house research report.
  • Hover the cursor over the "report" icon to see the text of the house research report.
  • Click the "report" icon or the report title to view the full report.
  • The "House Research" table also displays the date, primary ticker on the report, author name, and (if the report made a revision to the House Recommendation) the recommendation revision associated with the report.
The Text Search tab allows you to search all Broker Research, both company and industry/strategy pieces, for a set of words or a particular phrase. The results on this page are sorted by the 'relevance' of the search terms to a specific document. See our Search Tips for more information about Text Search.

On the right hand side of the page, there is a section titled More Options. Typically you only need to set these options once and never need to revisit them.
  • If you want to research from "Excluded Brokers" or "Excluded Analysts", hidden from your search results, select this option. It will stay selected until you change it. You can also have research from Excluded Brokers or Excluded Analysts filtered from the research you receive via e-mail.
  • Research written in various character sets can also be excluded from the research results you see here and from the research you receive via e-mail. You can use the options under Asset Class to choose between Equity Research or Fixed Income research.
  • Morning Notes can be hidden from research results and from the research you receive via e-mail by checking the Hide Morning Notes checkbox. Morning Notes typically refer to several stocks and contain highlights about those stocks from more thorough research reports. Some people prefer not to read them because they are redundant with the company reports they already read.
